Modern IF is easier to start than the old days. You often do not need to hunt down a platform-specific interpreter before playing. Many games launch in a browser, and discovery is much better than it was when link pages ruled the earth like tiny HTML dragons.
The basic path
For most new players:
- Browse or search IFDB.
- Pick a beginner-friendly game.
- Play in the browser when available.
- If you download a story file, open it with a suitable interpreter.
- Keep notes, save often, and come up for air occasionally.
Browser play vs. local play
Browser play is convenient and great for first contact. Local interpreters are better when you want a consistent reading experience, a library, offline play, typography control, or better save/transcript handling.
TerpVaultās long-term sweet spot is to make RetroRealm itself a curated entry point: searchable metadata, playable files where allowed, beginner notes, hints, and careful provenance.
