Getting stuck is not failure. In IF, getting stuck is weather. The question is whether you need a breeze, a lantern, or a full rescue party with sandwiches.
Use the gentlest help first
Try help in this order:
- Re-read the room and object descriptions.
- Check the game’s built-in
HELP,ABOUT, orHINTScommand. - Search your notes for unused objects or unresolved clues.
- Ask for a hint on a forum or community space.
- Use a hint file if one exists.
- Use a walkthrough only for the smallest step needed.
A walkthrough is useful, but it can turn exploration into furniture assembly. Use it like a lockpick, not a bulldozer.
Ask better hint questions
Good hint requests include:
- The game title and version, if known.
- Your current location.
- What you are trying to do.
- What you have already tried.
- Whether you want a gentle nudge or direct answer.
Example:
TEXT
I'm playing Example Quest. I'm in the observatory with the brass telescope and sealed hatch. I have the silver key, black lens, and rope. I tried unlocking the hatch and looking through the telescope. Could I get a gentle hint, not a full solution?
Spoiler etiquette
When writing hints, reveal only what is needed. Stack the clues from vague to direct:
TEXT
Hint 1: Look more closely at the object that mentions heat.
Hint 2: The wax seal reacts to fire.
Hint 3: Light the candle, then hold it near the letter.
Solution: LIGHT CANDLE. MELT SEAL WITH CANDLE. OPEN LETTER.
Walkthroughs are maps, not monuments
A good walkthrough should be:
- Step-by-step.
- Clear about optional actions.
- Honest about irreversible choices.
- Free of unnecessary story spoilers when possible.
- Tested from a fresh start.
RetroRealm can eventually pair TerpVault entries with separate tabs for Hints, Walkthrough, and How to Play so players can decide how much help they want.
